Songwriting

Songwriting rules can be challenged, broken, or ignored. As a music producer with a strong background in music theory, I've seen this truth unfold. However, I believe there are important exceptions. Many music conventions remain relevant; traditional chord systems still sound pleasing, we tune to A440, and we typically use familiar song structures like verses and choruses.

New artists often use modern tools without traditional training, which leads them to unintentionally break musical rules as they create until something sounds good. While this can sometimes yield success, it's often driven by luck. On the other hand, some composers stick rigidly to traditional norms, resulting in work that feels boring and unoriginal.

The best collaborations often occur between these two extremes. When a songwriter creates a unique melody and chord structure without traditional constraints, and a producer helps align it with basic conventions, the outcome can be exceptional.

Aspiring songwriters should stay open to feedback from experienced musicians and industry professionals. While it's tempting to be defensive about your work, this can limit its potential. Some new writers may believe their music is irreplaceable and must be safeguarded, but this mindset can hinder growth. Recognize that creativity is endless, and being willing to let go of ideas will allow for better and more abundant work.
